On the Fly: Tips for Packing Like a Pro

No matter the destination, an organized suitcase makes traveling more enjoyable. Save money, time and space by packing efficiently and leave stress, wrinkled clothes and extra baggage fees behind.
Minimize Load, Maximize Wardrobe

1. Lay Out Clothes

Before packing clothes, lay items on a flat surface. Choose materials like synthetics, wool, denim and knits that don’t easily wrinkle. Stick to one color scheme, such as a neutral (black, blue or gray) with one or two pops of color, so every piece of clothing coordinates. Include clothing that can be dressed up or down to streamline your packing. Try on and edit out items that do not fit well. Following a formula like three tops for every bottom helps prevent overpacking. In most cases, three pairs of shoes—walking shoes, a sandal or boot and a dressy pair—are sufficient for one trip.

2. Roll and Fold

Use two different techniques to maximize suitcase space and minimize wrinkles. Tightly roll softer items like undergarments, T-shirts, cotton clothing, jeans and knits. Fold stiffer fabrics, such as blazers, dress pants, skirts and starched shirts. Use packing or compression cubes to group similar items together. In a pinch, sealed plastic bags also work.

3. Fill Empty Space

Pare down on baggage by using every inch of space in luggage. Pack hats upside down and fill them with soft goods like socks or T-shirts to maintain the hats’ shapes. Roll socks and place them inside shoes. Tuck swimwear and scarves in suitcase corners and fit hair tools around bag edges. Coil a belt inside the collar of a starched shirt to prevent the collar from being crushed or snake a belt around the bag perimeter.

Packing Basics

Start with a List.

Write a packing list one or two weeks before a trip to avoid forgetting items or packing too much. Start with major categories, such as clothing, technology, important documents and toiletries. Review the list the morning you leave and use it again at the end of the trip to avoid leaving items behind.

Choose the Right Bag.

No one-size-fits-all bag works for every trip. When you travel by plane, know the size and weight restrictions to avoid extra fees for checked bags and carry-ons. If you’ll move several times, using public transportation or walking, choose a backpack or light suitcase with wheels. Select a large suitcase for a cold-weather destination that requires bulky outdoor gear. Compact suitcases work well for short getaways or warm-weather destinations.

Keep Toiletries at the Ready.

Save time by keeping a toiletry bag always ready for travel. At the end of each trip, restock travel-size products, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and eyedrops. Whenever possible, replace liquid beauty products with solids in perfumes, soap, shampoo, conditioner, cream-based makeup and lotion to avoid spills and get around TSA requirements.

Tip: Take a photo of all clothes and travel items before packing them in a suitcase. The picture serves as a quick reference if anything gets lost and needs to be replaced.

Tip: Always keep valuables such as laptops, cameras, jewelry and phones, close by when traveling. Pack them in a carry-on or personal bag to ensure they make it to your destination if checked luggage is delayed.
