1 And it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag; ² it came to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance. ³ And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped. ⁴ And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also. ⁵ And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead? ⁶ And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him. ⁷ And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I. ⁸ And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite. ⁹ And he said unto me, Stand, I pray thee, beside me, and slay me; for anguish hath taken hold of me, because my life is yet whole in me. ¹⁰ So I stood beside him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

¹¹ Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him: ¹² and they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword. ¹³ And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite. ¹⁴ And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy Jehovah’s anointed? ¹⁵ And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him, so that he died. ¹⁶ And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain Jehovah’s anointed.

¹⁷ And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son ¹⁸ (and he bade them teach the children of Judah the song of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

‍

¹⁹ Thy glory, O Israel, is slain upon thy high places!
How are the mighty fallen!
²⁰ Tell it not in Gath,
Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon;
Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
²¹ Ye mountains of Gilboa,
Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings:
For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away,
The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.
²² From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty,
The bow of Jonathan turned not back,
And the sword of Saul returned not empty.
²³ Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives,
And in their death they were not divided:
They were swifter than eagles,
They were stronger than lions.
²⁴ Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet delicately,
Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.
²⁵ How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!
^‍Jonathan is slain upon thy high places.
²⁶ I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan:
Very pleasant hast thou been unto me:
Thy love to me was wonderful,
Passing the love of women.
²⁷ How are the mighty fallen,
And the weapons of war perished!

2 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron. ² So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. ³ And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. ⁴ And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.

And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul. ⁵ And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. ⁶ And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing. ⁷ Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

⁸ Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; ⁹ and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. ¹⁰ Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. ¹¹ And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

²⁰ Now there were certain Greeks among those that went up to worship at the feast: ²¹ these therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. ²² Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: Andrew cometh, and Philip, and they tell Jesus. ²³ And Jesus answereth them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. ²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit. ²⁵ He that loveth his life loseth it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. ²⁶ If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will the Father honor. ²⁷ Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause came I unto this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify thy name. There came therefore a voice out of heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. ²⁹ The multitude therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it had thundered: others said, An angel hath spoken to him. ³⁰ Jesus answered and said, This voice hath not come for my sake, but for your sakes. ³¹ Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. ³² And I, if I be lifted up ^‍from the earth, will draw all men unto myself. ³³ But this he said, signifying by what manner of death he should die. ³⁴ The multitude therefore answered him, We have heard out of the law that the Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? ³⁵ Jesus therefore said unto them, Yet a little while is the light among you. Walk while ye have the light, that darkness overtake you not: and he that walketh in the darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. ³⁶ While ye have the light, believe on the light, that ye may become sons of light.

These things spake Jesus, and he departed and hid himself from them. ³⁷ But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they believed not on him: ³⁸ that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake,

‍

Lord, who hath believed our report?
And to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

‍

³⁹ For this cause they could not believe, for that Isaiah said again,

‍

⁴⁰ He hath blinded their eyes, and he hardened their heart;
Lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart,
And should turn,
And I should heal them.

‍

⁴¹ These things said Isaiah, because he saw his glory; and he spake of him. ⁴² Nevertheless even of the rulers many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: ⁴³ for they loved the glory that is of men more than the glory that is of God.

‍

⁴⁴ And Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. ⁴⁵ And he that beholdeth me beholdeth him that sent me. ⁴⁶ I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me may not abide in the darkness. ⁴⁷ And if any man hear my sayings, and keep them not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. ⁴⁸ He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my sayings, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day. ⁴⁹ For I spake not from myself; but the Father that sent me, he hath given me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. ⁵⁰ And I know that his commandment is life eternal; the things therefore which I speak, even as the Father hath said unto me, so I speak.

¹⁹ Open to me the gates of righteousness:
I will enter into them, I will give thanks unto Jehovah.
²⁰ This is the gate of Jehovah;
The righteous shall enter into it.
²¹ I will give thanks unto thee; for thou hast answered me,
And art become my salvation.
²² The stone which the builders rejected
Is become the head of the corner.
²³ This is ^‍Jehovah’s doing;
It is marvellous in our eyes.
²⁴ This is the day which Jehovah hath made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
²⁵ Save now, we beseech thee, O Jehovah:
O Jehovah, we beseech thee, send now prosperity.
²⁶ Blessed be he that cometh in the name of Jehovah:
We have blessed you out of the house of Jehovah.
²⁷ Jehovah is God, and he hath given us light:
Bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.
²⁸ Thou art my God, and I will give thanks unto thee:
Thou art my God, I will exalt thee.
²⁹ Oh give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good;
For his lovingkindness endureth for ever.

²⁷ He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house;
But he that hateth bribes shall live.
²⁸ The heart of the righteous studieth to answer;
But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
