A sweet, comforting baked French toast with a buttery brown sugar base and spiced custard, perfect for brunch or breakfast gatherings.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter

½ cup packed brown sugar

5 large eggs

2 cups skim milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 (20-ounce) loaf Italian bread cut into 1-inch slices

Powdered sugar, for serving

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place butter and brown sugar in a 15×10×1-inch jelly-roll pan; heat in oven for 10 minutes or until melted. Stir to combine.
  2. In a medium bowl whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Dip each bread slice into egg mixture, coating both sides, then place on melted butter mixture in pan.
  3. Bake, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes or until bread is slightly crisp. Let stand for 10 minutes. Before serving, lightly sprinkle powdered sugar on top.
