This rich and fluffy Butter Icing is made by combining a cooked milk-and-flour mixture with butter, shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Ideal for layering cakes, it can be paired with strawberry or raspberry pie filling for a colorful and flavorful dessert.

Ingredients

1 cup milk

¼ cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup butter, softened

½ cup shortening

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan stir milk into flour; cook and stir over medium heat until thickened. Pour into glass or metal bowl and place plastic wrap directly onto hot paste. Cool completely.
  2. In a large bowl beat sugar, butter and shortening with electric mixer until combined. Beat in vanilla. Add cooled flour mixture and beat until smooth and fluffy and sugar is dissolved, about 10 minutes.

Note: Use strawberry or raspberry pie filling between middle layers for a special effect, then use ⅓ of the icing on each of the other layers.
