Grandma’s Sugar Cookies

Delicate, soft sugar cookies with a tender crumb, perfect for shaping and frosting, delivering a nostalgic, sweet, and buttery treat just like grandma made.

Ingredients

Cookies

1 cup shortening

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

¼ cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3¼ cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

Sugar Cookie Frosting (1½ cups)

2 cups confectioners' sugar

¼ cup shortening

3 tablespoons water

1 teaspoon almond extract

Food coloring (optional)

Directions

Cookies
  1. In a large mixing bowl beat together shortening and sugar. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla and beat well. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to shortening mixture and beat until well combined.
  2. Dust work surface with confectioners’ sugar. Roll dough ⅛-inch thick, cut with cookie cutters, and place on parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
  3. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven  for 9 to 11 minutes. Remove cookies to wire rack to cool. Frost with Sugar Cookie Frosting.

  1. In a medium bowl, beat together all ingredients.
