Growing in Delight of God

“I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” — Psalm 16:8–9 ESV

Growing in Delight of God

“I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” — Psalm 16:8–9 ESV

Our daily lives are often filled with things we need to do and things we ought to do. We tend to reserve worship and rest in God for the margins of our days. We seek God during set quiet times and attend church regularly. This is good, but what’s better is that God has designed us for more. It’s not more striving or legalism—it’s more joy! We can grow in our adoration of our Savior by intentionally abiding in Him, wherever we are. Whether we are working in the home or working in the office, in a season of peace or a season of suffering, we can find satisfaction in our Maker by shifting our gaze heavenward.

Meditate on God’s goodness and character.

Think of God. Who is He to you? Who does Scripture say He is? Remind yourself of His divine attributes and qualities. This act of acknowledging the holiness of God and His kindness can reframe your heart with gratitude, worth and a higher purpose for your day (Psalm 145:5).

Pray silently throughout your day.

Bring fears, hopes, needs and praise to God as you go from task to task. When challenges arise, bring them to Him in the moment. You can pray silently as you walk, as you work and as you serve your family. Praise God for being with you at all times, for granting peace to your soul and helping you discern your next steps (Philippians 4:6).

Look for God’s hand in the details and creation.

Zoom into your day and past week and recognize the minutiae of your life as the hand of God working all things together for your good and His glory (Romans 8:28). Zoom out to Creation and the way God has put order to all things. He makes beautiful things in your life and for the world. It’s refreshing to stop and notice them (1 Peter 1:8).

Recount His faithfulness past and present.

Think of the many ways God has answered your prayers and has directed your steps throughout your life. Ask God to help you see the ways He is currently providing for you that you may have overlooked. Find joy in worshipping a God who has shown His faithfulness and love directly to you and to the world at large since the beginning of time (Hebrews 10:23).
