Propagation Station

Set up a series of glass containers on a shelf or mantel to grow new plants and add style to your home. Pothos, philodendrons, monsteras and ZZ plants (Zanzibar gems) propagate in water. Snip off a 3- to 6-inch piece at a 45-degree angle from a healthy parent plant. Make sure to include a node or two in the cutting and remove leaves that might be submerged in water. The cuttings can be potted in soil once roots grow at least 1 inch long.

Air Plant Wreath

A distinctive wreath made from living plants and decorative or live moss adds light and color to an interior wall or door. Air plants absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves and do not need soil to grow. Place the wreath in bright indirect light and regularly mist the wreath with a spray bottle to keep the plants hydrated.

Macramé Globe Holder

Macramé plant hangers free up shelving in small spaces as plants hang from the walls or ceilings. Plus, the hangers offer a different, easy and affordable way to display houseplants. Designs can be simple or intricate, depending on the complexity of the knots.

Terrariums

These glass environments operate as self-sustaining greenhouses and offer alternatives to traditional houseplants. Closed containers seal in humidity, making them ideal for tropical plants. Cacti, succulents and other plants that need dry conditions grow best in open containers. To maintain, place terrariums in bright indirect sunlight and periodically prune plants as they grow too large for the container. Water open terrariums once a week or when soil is dry. Stop watering when water begins to collect at the container bottom. Closed terrariums may only need water every 4 to 6 months.

Indoor Herb Garden

Keep fresh herbs for cooking at your fingertips with an indoor garden. Basil, chives, sage, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary and thyme are easy to grow when placed next to a sunny window. Just keep soil consistently moist and harvest a few leaves at a time. Only cut a quarter or less of the plant at one time to prevent shock and encourage new growth.
