Resurrection Eggs for Easter

Spend time before your Easter Sunday crafting a set of eggs that tell the story of Jesus' death and Resurrection in the Bible for a creative way to teach children the true message of Easter.
Natural Dyed Eggs

Colorful pastel eggs liven up many springtime celebrations as symbols of new life found in the Resurrection. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb, baby chicks emerge from the hard eggshells. Bring color and joy to your Easter table using fresh produce and food scraps.

Use ingredients such as blueberries, onion skins, cabbage and beets to naturally dye eggs into beautiful colors, following the steps below.

Blue eggs: use 1 cup red cabbage, thinly sliced

Purple eggs: use 1 cup blueberries

Pink and coral eggs: use 1 cup red onion skins

Pink and red eggs: use 1 cup red beets, cut into 1-inch pieces

Yellow eggs: use 2 tablespoons ground turmeric

Step 1:

Bring 3 cups of water to a boil in medium-size stock pot and add the red cabbage. Simmer cabbage for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 2 Tbsps. white vinegar. Let mixture cool to room temperature. Pour the cooled dye through a fine-mesh strainer into 1/2 gallon glass jar. Repeat with blueberries, red onion skins, beets and turmeric.

Step 2:

Add large, white hardboiled or blown-out eggs to jars, using slotted spoon to gently place without cracking. Make sure that eggs are fully submerged in the dye.

Step 3:

Check eggs and remove from the dye when your desired color is achieved. For lighter-color eggs, remove from dyes after 5 to 10 minutes. To achieve a darker color, eggs can be left in dyes overnight. Remove eggs and place on a paper towel or put back in cardboard egg carton to dry before handling.

Step 4:

Store hard-boiled eggs in a refrigerator for up to 1 week.
