Sunny Prints

Cyanotype, a photographic printing process from the 1800s, produces vibrant shades of blue and white using exposure to sunlight. The quick technique offers many creative possibilities for fabric, paper, and more.
Cyanotype Tips & Information

• There are four basic steps to the printing process. First, coat fabric or paper with the chemical solution, available at art stores or online. Then place an object on the surface and expose the item to sunlight. Last, rinse the surface in tap water and let dry.

• Opaque objects placed on a surface give a small range of tones (dark blue and white). Translucent objects, like feathers or thin flowers, create a wider tonal range of blues and whites. Thick objects that do not lie flat cause blurry edges.

• For a deep blue finish, add a little hydrogen peroxide to the post-exposure wash. Most textiles need a full 24 hours after washing to oxidize and dry.

Cyanotype Projects

Framed Prints

Dress up an entryway or office with a gallery wall of artwork in bright blue hues. Choose a sturdy white or ivory alkaline-free paper, such as watercolor or archival paper, that will not disintegrate in the washing stage. Hang artwork in an area without direct sunlight or use UV-blocking glass in the frames to prevent the prints from fading over time.

Place Mats & Napkins

Make a statement at your next backyard picnic or BBQ by using cyanotype linens on the tablescape. Textiles made from natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, silk, hemp, bamboo or rayon, work best. To prevent fading during routine care, hand-wash and avoid detergents that contain bleach, phosphate or sodium. Do not hang in sun to dry.

Wooden Trays

Choose solid wooden objects, rather than those with veneer or plywood, for best results. If a tray has elevated sides, make sure the sun directly hits the surface at a perpendicular angle to prevent shadows in the print. Use a tray on a coffee table, bookshelf or side table as home decor. Or fill the tray with small thoughtful gift items and/or nonperishable packaged food for a unique handmade present for a neighbor or friend.

Pillows

Cyanotype prints add a summery touch to outdoor patios and decks. White or light-color fabrics provide the brightest blues. Before applying the cyanotype solution, remove pillow filling and thoroughly wash fabric without softener to release any oils or stains. After printing, thoroughly wash out the chemical solution. Once the pillows cover dries, press with an iron on a low setting. Avoid placing pillows in direct sunlight to prevent fading.
