Alfresco Entertaining

Make the most of a warm summer day or evening by hosting a delicious outdoor meal for friends and family. Simple dishes, tasty at almost any temperature, allow for plenty of time to linger and enjoy others’ company under the sun or stars. These easily adjusted dishes accommodate any size of dinner party.

Practice neighborhood hospitality and plan an alfresco (Italian for “in fresh air”) meal at a park, in your backyard, on a patio or near a dock. Bright summer flavors paired with a decorative tablescape and a warm summer breeze make for a memorable get-together with friends. To keep prep and cleanup fairly effortless, choose make-ahead easy-to-transport dishes that are simple for guests to eat without multiple utensils. Prepare versatile foods that can be served at any temperature so there’s no need to reheat food throughout the evening.

Add a touch of color to a neutral tablescape with your choice of napkins and a simple floral arrangement. If eating during the day, make sure to provide ample shade for guests by setting the table under an umbrella or awning. If serving the meal at night, add strings of lights or lanterns to illuminate the area. Before guests arrive, spray for bugs and/or light a citronella candle to ward off uninvited pests. Add a welcoming touch with your favorite music playing softly in the background.

Cold Fried Chicken

Frying chicken seals in moisture and flavor with a crispy shell. Cook the ideal-for-picnics chicken before the event and serve it cold or at room temperature.

Shared meals across a table provide an opportunity for connection. Whether you dine with old friends or new acquaintances, keep the conversation meaningful throughout the evening. Share what God is doing in your life or the lives around you. Find chances to ask for or offer prayer and be prepared to gently guide the conversation to lighter topics when needed. Hospitality offers a way to honor and glorify God in our homes or backyards.
